Légère Alibaug

This 12000sf residence is a brutalist expression of the architects love of the Japanese sensibility of wabi-sabi. The entire project is veiled behind a tall beautifully hand crafted basalt wall with only the security cabin peeping through. What lies behind is an enigma only indicated by the dancing foliage towering above the high wall. The narrative of the house is controlled and a Katsuraesque meandering trail leads one from the entrance to every other space in the house. The trail has reflecting pools, Japanese gardens, rock gardens, magnificent views of the landscape and the building nestled within it. Every step and turn opens up a vista and the building is designed to capture the moving light through shadows cast on the exposed concrete surfaces. Living is imagined as in the tropics while allowing for a luxury that can transgress the indoors and outdoors constantly.
